Teacher's Strike!

When life gives you lemons, make lemonade... or something like that anyways.

So last week the lecturers were on strike. It's all settled now and classes have resumed but I took advantage of the dead-space and did a little traveling last week. I went to a place called Ada Foah with a group of students from Carolina and a couple of other students from other US schools.

Ada Foah sits on a point that seperates the Atlantic from the Volta River. When we arrived to town (by Tro-tro of course) we loaded up in a colorful canoe and travled about 30 mins. down the Volta to the Maranatha Beach Camp. We stayed in sand-floor huts directly next to a large fishing village. We spent our days basking in the sun, exploring the village, body surfing in the rough African Atlantic, and taking a sketchy canoe ride out into the estuary.

I sampled some local sugar-cane alcohol that could probably clean paint off of a car. Also, on Saturday night, we enjoyed a bonfire complete with cultural dancing and traditional drums. I gathered some great pictures from the trip but, unfortunately, those may have to wait until I can get access to faster internet in Accra.

Finally... an update

I'm sorry I haven't posted sooner... I've been really busy getting settled in and busy with my school orientation. Things are great here in Ghana. I've met some great people, tasted some delicious food, and had a fantastic first week in this beautiful country. I've spent some time traveling around the city of Accra getting familiar with my new surroundings. Riding the tro-tros is a fun way to travel but takes a little getting used to in order to not get lost. I've been picking up a little Twi and the Ghanians find it pretty funny when an Obruni (white person) tries to speak their native tongue.

The internet is extremely slow around here hence the reason many of you haven't heard from me, or why I haven't posted much on my blog. Unless I find a better option for internet I think that's going to be the case for most of this trip. I can't stand spending hours on end just trying to send out a few messages or update my blog... especially when there is so much to see and do in this great country. This blog may not turn out like I envisioned when I started it but that's okay... you may all just have to wait until I get home to see all my pictures and hear all my stories.
